they didn't commit..."

FILM 1984

This sci fi thriller, starring muscle-man Arnold
Schwarzenegger as a cyborg, was directed by
James Cameron .This futuristic thriller has been
endlessly imitated.
Los Angeles has been reduced to rubble in 2029
and is run by machines. A cyborg is thrust back
in time programmed to terminate Sarah Connor,
the mother of a man who will lead the human
resistance against the machines in 2029.
A member of the human resistance is also sent back
to 1984 to rescue Sarah Connor from being
assassinated before she can give birth.

  WHAT WE BOUGHT 1984

How many teeth were pulled out thanks to
one of these monsters? Deliciously chewy,
and yours for only 10p, they were a particularly
 joyous after-school treat.

 FACEBOOK COMMENT

  Claire Conway
They were even nice during school although a bit
hard to without the teachers seeing you eat them

Made in their thousands, each doll managed
to maintain its identity with an individual name
and birth certificate. They were apparently the
brainchild of an American art student who,
in order to pay his tuition fees, made dolls and
sold them at local craft fairs.
As interest grew he came up with the idea of adoption.
They were so popular there just weren't enough on
the shelves. The previous Christmas, parents had
camped outside malls and toy shops in America
(where else?) to make sure they could take
one home for their little darling.

1996 MUSIC & MEMORIES ON M.R.B.

We're back with another blog and we're looking
at this week in the summer of 1996 .
As usual we start off with the chart of this week
in July 1996 and we've chosen to put up the
top eleven songs so as to include  the landmark single
of the  year and that was the Spice Girls who arrived
with a bang at no 11 unleashing  girl power on the world

No1 Song Mid July 1996

Because the video needed to be taken in one shot,
the group rehearsed the routine several times through

the night, while a steadycam operator followed them
About. Gerri Halliwell wrote: "The video I remember
as being very chaotic and cold.
It wasn't very controlled—we didn't want it to be.
We wanted the camera to capture the madness

 of the Spice Girls".
Virgin's executives were horrified with the final result:

 "the girls were freezing cold,
which showed itself in various different ways",

the video  was later banned in some parts of Asia because of
Mel B's erect nipples. The lighting was considered too dark
and gloomy, the best takes showed the girls bumping with
the furniture and looking behind them.
and Gerri Halliwell's showgirl outfit would be considered

 too threatening by music channels.
Virgin suggested a re-shoot of the video or creating an

alternate one for the US,but the group refused.
The video was sent for trial airing in its original form.

When the music video first appeared on the British cable
network The Box, it was selected so frequently
that it reached the top of the viewers' chart within two

hours of going on air,and stayed at number one for
thirteen weeks.
It was aired up to seventy times a week at its peak
and became the most requested track in the channel's history.
The video won Best Dance Video at the 1997

MTV Video Music Awards, and Best Video at the 1997
Comet Media Awards.

FRIENDS OF OUR MEMORY RADIO BLOG

  TV 1996

A new series started on sunday evenings in 1996

Set in the small Irish mountain town of Ballykissangel
It had various plots which revolved around the town regulars
and their romantic, dramatic and comedic adventures.

The show that Chris Evans quit the BBC over.

It was an anarchic, unscripted ramble through new-laddishness

and celebrity gossip with a supernatural ability to feature stars just as they were at their hottest. Jarvis Cocker appeared the night after his "mooning" of Michael Jackson at The Brits, Robbie Williams after his split from Take That, and Gazza after his axing from the England squad.

FILM 1996

Renton,(Ewan Mc Gregor) deeply immersed in,the Edinburgh drug scene, tries to clean up and get out, despite the allure of the drugsand influence of friends.

Woody, a pull-string cowboy, is little Andy's favourite toy.
That is until Buzz Lightyear, high-tech space ranger, comes
along, with his annoying catchphrase - To Infinity and Beyond.
This computer-animated film had the smallest animation staff ever used for a Disney feature.
But, because of the mindboggling scale of the project, each week of production produced only 3.5 minutes of film. It took 9 months just to shade Andy's hair!

WHAT WE BOUGHT

A new Magazine for 1996

T3 0r Tomorrow's Technology Today,
was launched in 1996.
Basically a bible of gadgets, games and goodies,
It's still on sale today, alongside other hi-tech
toy mags for grown-up kids,

FASHION 1996

Blame it on the Spice Girls
Short men everywhere groaned as stilettos were
replaced with yet another height nightmare.
Trainers that girls couldn't possibly run in
(but which might have been helpful in a pole
vaulting competition) were to the Nineties what
Platform shoes were to the Seventies - but for women only.
They  looked like orthopaedic aids and they were
everywhere in 1996.

TV 1992

Following  on from his success in the 1980's
hit show Auf Wiedersehen, Pet Jimmy Nail was
back on our screens in 1992 as the popular
Detective Spender.

US TV 1992

From 1992 The "Today" Show, talking

audience, 'If you want to go forward you
put your car in 'D.' If you want to go backward,
you put your car in 'R.''
But you know something? Either way,
the economy is still F'd.'' —Jay Leno

 WANES WORLD

The movie that started a whole new way to talk
Wayne Campbell : No way!
Garth Algar
: Way!

A spin-off from TV show Saturday Night Live,
Wayne's World brought 'teen speak' to a
bigger audience.

Wayne and Garth broadcast a low-budget
public access cable TV show from Wayne's
basement. The show catches the attention
of a sleazy TV producer (Rob Lowe) who
wants to make a big-budget version
of 'Wayne's World' but is also after Wayne's
girlfriend Cassandra.
Wayne and Garth have to battle it out withthe TV producer to save their show and
get Cassandra back.

MEMORIES OF IRELAND'S

ITALIA 90 WORLD CUP

No1 Song July 1990

iphone/ipad  friendly live version

TV 1990

Back in 1990 for many Irish families.
Sunday nights just weren’t complete without
half an hour in the company of the lovely
Theresa Lowe.
We watched in envy as contestants won exotic
breaks away.
Teresa Lowe was RTÉ’s golden girl, but in 1997
she disappeared from our screens,
prompting many a pub pundit to ask:
“Where in the world is Theresa Lowe?”
Well she studied for the bar at the King’s Inns.
and graduated in 1997, and since then has
been working as a full-time barrister.

Seinfeld stood out from the many sitcoms of its time
because None of the principal characters were related

by family or work connections but remained close
friends throughout the seasons.Unlike many other sitcoms,
Seinfeld focused less on a plot and more on
day to day things such as waiting in line at the movies, going out for dinner, and dealing with the petty injustices of life.

FILM 90

Pretty Woman was the top movie of 1990
Millionaire businessman Richard Gere picks up a hooker in
Beverley Hills and, before you can say Pygmalion, he's turned
 her into a princess.
The film made a star of Julia Roberts, despite claims that
a pair of 'stunt legs' had been used on the promotional movie
posters to increase their 'wow' factor.

FASHION 1990

Vogueing was a style of dance that emerged in

New York in early 1990.
It was inspired - as the name suggests-
by standing in the middle of a nightclub striking
the poses favoured by fashion models.
Madonna was credited with popularising the 'dance'
across the world by both writing a song about it,
and vogueing in her video.
